Juneteenth ed. of Listen Here: Poetry slam and Open Mic
Our monthly open mic returns with a special edition. For Juneteenth, we’ll be hosting our first poetry slam alongside the open mic! Contestants pay $10 to enter and compete with two prepared poems for the chance to win. Cash prizes of $100 and $50 go to first and second place winners. Belonging Beyond Brown: film screening and conversation with Dr. Nina Gilbert of Morehouse College
To conclude our Juneteenth celebrations, Meetinghouse Revival invites educator and director of Morehouse Center for Excellence in Education, Dr. Nina Gilbert, to Corsicana for a screening of her documentary Belonging Beyond Brown. The film examines the lead-up and aftermath of the 1954 Supreme Court Case Brown v. Board in Black communities, schools, and students. Join us for a screening at the historic Palace Theatre followed by an open discussion with Dr. Gilbert and local educators.
